Austrian tenor Florian Thomas began his musical education at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he studied Lied and oratorio. At the same time, he pursued vocal studies at the Conservatory of Wiener Neustadt. Prior to this, he dedicated himself to studies in musicology, law, and French horn.

​

Florian Thomas is an internationally sought-after soloist, performing regularly in oratorios, concerts, and operas. His song recitals have taken him to Austria, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

​

Some of his most notable achievements include:

  • A celebrated performance stepping in as Erik in Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman under Anthony Negus at the Longborough Festival Opera.

  • Singing the tenor part in Richard Blackford’s cantata Voices of Exile with members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under Gavin Carr.

  • Performing the role of Don José in Bizet’s Carmen at the Dartington Festival under David Angus.

  • The role of Walther von Stolzing in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in a new production by Fulham Opera London under Ben Woodward.

  • Singing the tenor part in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in Perth, Australia.

  • A guest appearance as Froh in Wagner’s Das Rheingold in Singapore.

Upcoming engagements include further performances of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in London and Vienna, as well as Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius in Münster.

Before starting his solo career, Florian Thomas was a member of the Vienna State Opera Chorus and the Vienna State Opera Chorus Association. He performed at the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, and on international tours under conductors such as Peter Schneider, Kirill Petrenko, Ingo Metzmacher, and Asher Fisch. He also sang numerous solo roles at the Vienna State Opera, including Ambrogio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Wache (From the House of the Dead), Mühlenarbeiter (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk), Deputato fiammingo (Don Carlo), and Sergeant (La Bohème).

As a member of the Vienna Court Music Chapel, Florian Thomas regularly worked with renowned conductors such as Franz Welser-Möst, Erwin Ortner, and Johannes Prinz. He has performed in oratorios and masses at prestigious venues, including the Vienna Musikverein, the Vienna Konzerthaus, St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, the Liebfrauenkirche in Wiener Neustadt, and Graz Cathedral.
